The Beacon Project

Following an excellent Ofsted report in 2001, Grandpont was invited to become a Beacon school. This meant sharing ideas for good practice with other schools.

Our Beacon work was about creativity - as a curriculum area, and across the curriculum. The project started in 2002 and ran until July 2005. An important part of it was a programme of visiting artists coming to work with the children. We had a total of ten five day residencies: with visual artists, a musician and a storyteller and film-makers. The project funded a teacher to co-ordinate the work, supporting the development of all kinds of creativty in the school, and organising specialist INSET to share with other schools. In 2004 we exhibited for the first time as part of Oxfordshire Artweeks.

We have created photo diaries of the residencies to share with other schools and we have funded each of our partnership nursery schools in Oxfordshire to have a similar five day residency.

Although the project is over, the work carries on! As a team we have grown in confidence and it has affected how we work with the children and the breadth of experiences we offer them.

The creation of this web site is part of our Beacon work.
